Lorde admits she “sucks at being famous”

John Shearer/Getty Images via ABCWhen Lorde first came onto the scene as a 16-year-old, her smash “Royals” made her a global superstar.  These days, though, the craziness around her has died down a bit, for which she says she’s grateful.

“When it was happening, I was quite overwhelmed by it. But that was a long time ago,” Lorde tells NME. “If anything, I’ve slowly been getting less famous since ‘Royals’ was really big. Which is totally cool for me… I suck at being famous. And that’s fine.”

But during the initial hysteria over her and “Royals,” Lorde says, “It rocked my foundations and could have f***d me [up], you know? I remember being made aware of my looks and my body in a way that I had never been.”

The New Zealand star says online trolls targeted her appearance when, she says, she “beat their favorite people to Number One.”

“I remember all these kids online…they were like, ‘F**k her, she’s got really far-apart eyes.’ I remember being like, ‘Whoa! How did I get all this way without knowing I had far-apart eyes?’ Just weird [stuff] like that,” she recalls.

“But I was able to return to my family and shelter against that and get to where I am now. I feel so comfortable in myself.”

Lorde’s new album Melodrama arrives Friday in the Northern Hemisphere, though it’s already out in her native New Zealand.
